Common Pregnancy Questions

How is a due date calculated?

A due date is typically calculated by adding 280 days (40 weeks) to the first day of your last menstrual period (LMP). This is based on the assumption of a 28-day cycle with ovulation occurring on day 14. If your cycle is longer or shorter, adjustments may be needed.

How accurate are due dates?

Only about 5% of women deliver on their exact due date. Most babies are born within two weeks before or after the estimated due date. A normal pregnancy can last anywhere from 37 to 42 weeks. Your healthcare provider may adjust your due date based on early ultrasound measurements.

What if I don't know my LMP?

If you don't know the date of your last period, an ultrasound can help estimate your due date, especially if done in the first trimester. Early ultrasounds (before 13 weeks) are the most accurate for dating a pregnancy.

What are the signs of pregnancy?

Common early signs include missed period, nausea/vomiting (morning sickness), breast tenderness, fatigue, frequent urination, and food aversions or cravings. However, symptoms vary widely among women, and some experience few or no symptoms early on.
